What is metabolic performance?

You may have heard the term metabolism before. But what does it mean, and how does it apply to you? Here at Radix, we strive to create a range of products that optimise your physical and cognitive function so you can perform at your best. We do this through our nutritional design and something that we call metabolic performance.

What is metabolism?

The term metabolism accounts for all the chemical processes that occur within the body [1]. In its most simple form, it is how we convert our food into energy and then use that energy to survive and function. At any one time, the cells within our bodies are undertaking countless chemical reactions [2]. These reactions can be broken into two categories, catabolic reactions and anabolic reactions. Catabolic reactions are those where something is broken down to produce energy. This accounts for most digestive processes and the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins to produce energy for cellular function. Anabolic reactions are those where energy is used to synthesise an end product. This includes creating an enormously diverse range of proteins, nucleic acid, and other molecules required for us to build and maintain bodily systems and structures [2].

Metabolic processes for performance

As all body functions rely on metabolism, naturally, this extends to the realm of health and performance. All relevant systems in the body that affect your cognitive and physical function are simply a component of metabolism. From energy production and muscle function to brain health and decision making, and everything in between, metabolism forms the basis on which these systems function. It stands to reason, then, that the only way to optimise your health and cognitive and physical performance is through your metabolism. And as all metabolic processes stem from the food we provide our bodies, nutrition is the only way to access your true metabolic potential. Protein, carbohydrates, fats, fibre, vitamins, minerals, gut health and many more aspects of nutrition all play a role when it comes to performing at your best.
